US rifle units underwent several changes in uniform, and several orders of dress were de regeur at one time, however the most common uniform worn in the field consisted of a fringed hunting frock and a shako. The green-fringed frock was an officially issued item, a stylized and tamed version of the frontiersman's hunting shirt, but nonetheless practical, comfortable, and popular with the men. Late in the war, grey roundabouts were issued. The cylindrical "yeoman-crowned" shako was worn, but was leather (which results in confusion among researchers at times, who assign them the only leather cap they are famliar with, the tombstone shako).
Maryland militia riflemen wore essentially the same uniform, but with red instead of yellow fringe.
