Tombstone Shako, Roundabouts, a.k.a. "Scott's Brigade" (Infantry)

Tombstone Shako, Roundabouts, a.k.a. "Scott's Brigade" (Infantry)

Due to a shortage of blue cloth, plain grey wool "roundabouts" were fashioned by the army in huge numbers and distributed in time for the 1814 campaign season. These were cut in a similar way to the linen roundabouts which were already in use, and had been famously worn by Harrison's men during a galling shortage of uniforms during the winter of 1812.

The wool roundabouts were made famous by Winfield Scott's brigade during the Niagara campaign.
