Highlanders in Trews

When uniforms were issued to the 93rd Sutherlands at Cape Good Hope before their departure for North America, they were not given kilts, but rather plaid trousers, called "trews" by the Highland troops. Although dramatic, the kilted Highlanders of European service did not wear their famed garments in the War of 1812.
