Winter Uniforms

Of the larger battles, Crysler's Farm featured the British winter dress most prominently. The 49th Foot was mistaken by militia by the Americans because of their long grey coats. These troops sport many features of winter dress as enumerated by Renee Chartrand: fur shako covers, leather "beef boots, "which resemble Muk-Luks, and gloves. Officers have the most individualized and gaudy dress, adding fur stoles and fancy fur hats to their uniforms. One needs only look to the British army of the Crimean War, where little had changed since the Napoleonic Wars, to see photographs of their improvised approach to winter dress.

Note the flat appearance of the rolls on their backpacks; this is because only the blanket is rolled; the greatcoat is being worn!
