Five flank troops and one sergeant. A few American units had a company singled out as a flank, light, or grenadier unit, although this wasn't a common practice for the US as it was in Europe. The distinguishing features of an American flank company were apparently the wearing of gaiters outside the trousers, and a shako plume which had red-over-white rather than the all-white plume worn by the regular infantry. Some also wore chevrons on their right sleeve. One of the more notable elite US units was Ketchum's company, serving in the role of flankers for Jessup's famed 25th infantry at Lundy's Lane, part of Winfield Scott's grey-clad brigade. Ketchum's company took a number of high-ranking prisoners during the battle, and the irony of his name was lost on nobody!
