Description
The 93rd Sutherlands, of New Orleans fame, wore "trews" (tartan trousers), not kilts, in North America, and a tam with a checkered band. If you see references showing them in kilts, those sources are incorrect; they were issued tartan drawers made of Black Watch ("Government" sett) plaid when they departed for America from the Cape of Good Hope. There is no controversy I am aware of over this; just an over-abundance of historians for whom the mere mention of Highlanders creates an irresistable urge to append to it the exciting adjective "kilted".
