Bass Reeves was a renowned US Deputy Marshal who apprehended or killed numerous outlaws in the the Oklahoma Territory and spoke seven Native American languages. In an age of discrimination, just a few years after the Civil War, he was notable also for being black. He is thought to be one of two historical characters who formed the basis for "The Lone Ranger," the other being Frank Hamer.
